Opposition to Great Lake Trail Mounting with over 70 attending Gathering in Central Highlands
Friends of Great Lake hosted their first public gathering yesterday in Miena, Central Highlands.
The Meet and Greet Day was held to gain feedback and capture concerns from the local community around the upcoming proposal to build a 107km multi use trail around yingina/Great Lake.
Over 70 people attended, including Greens candidate Tabatha Badger, with many more expressing apologies for being unable to attend amidst current COVID fears.
The group now has over 100 financial members and were busy taking orders for merchandise including “Save Great Lake” signs, which could be purchased to display on private property to protest against the proposed development.
Many of the attendees expressed concerns over the trail’s proposed location and the potential impact to the local environment, much of which is protected as a World Heritage Area and includes the endangered Miena Cider Gum as well as being home to an abundance of vulnerable and endangered wildlife.
Other concerns raised included the potential impact to current use and access of the area for anglers and hunters and also the threat to the established culture of the yingina/Great Lake area.
